Design should be a reflection of who you are as a person or family. Even if you don’t have a lot of experience, surround yourself with creative and smart people. Be diligent, work your ass off, but have fun along the way.
Designers are constantly asked what room people should prioritize, what room to start with and I don’t really know the answer. I used to say wherever you spend the most time, which is usually the living room or family room-that’s the room people are going to see, where you spend most of your (awake) time entertaining. No one really sees your bedroom but you. But at the end of the day walking into a pulled together and inviting room is such a luxury and really does make you feel more special and grown up.

When is it worth spending a fortune on something?
When you really love it. I’m not talking about buying something on a whim, although if you have the money, wonderful, knock yourself out. But if you find yourself visiting something at a store every weekend, or you’re thinking about it on your coffee break or while you’re driving, fess up. You’re having a love affair with that piece, and you should surround yourself with things you love.

I believe your home should tell the story of who you are. What you love most collected and assembled in one space. All your objects, finds, hand-me-downs…spelling out who you are to the world. Fact is, there isn’t a single item in my own home that doesn’t have a story behind it.
